Socially Acceptable Conversation

Published by eclecticbird at 11:15 pm under All About Me Edit This

Why is it that to be considered polite and socially acceptable I have to lie?  I mean seriously, people expect you to smile even if you feel like crawling in a hole and hiding.  When I’m really stressed or depressed (run of the mill not clinical, if you were wondering) I have a lot of trouble doing the lying thing.

For example when my grandmother died and I looked like total crap from crying I had to go into the store and the cashier was like ‘how are you’.  Now this question almost always irritates me because you know the person doesn’t really care and they shouldn’t ask if they don’t care but it’s socially acceptable so they are the nice ones and I’m the bitch….sorry ranting…anyway.  So I said something like ‘actually I’m having a really bad day my grandmother just died’.  And she just looked at me and said something like I’m sorry and it’ll get better.  I looked at her and said, really it’s going to get better?  She’s going to come back to life, because otherwise it isn’t going to get better.   Which of course shut her up.

I know that she was being ‘nice’ and the polite thing to say would have been for me to say ‘fine’ so the socially acceptable wheel of conversation could run its course and because I didn’t I was being a bitch but dang.

I think I need a pin that says beware of the bitch or something.
