Prostitution is Illegal because it Makes Men Insecure
At least that’s the only thing I’ve been able to come up with. I mean it isn’t as if the women are being less exploited (if you want to use that argument) just because it’s illegal. How does this relate to a blog about my bitchyness? So glad you asked. I’ve noticed that another term used to identify women who know what they want, especially if it has anything to do with sex, is whore…slut is also used with astounding regularity but I’ll focus on whore for now.
That got me thinking….why is whore a derogatory term?Perhaps it is because of its illegality? So let’s examine that for a bit. Why shouldn’t a woman be able to earn money for using her body? If she wants to and the guy (or girl) paying her wants to what is the problem? Morality? Hmm…whose morality? Unmarried sex isn’t illegal and adultery isn’t illegal in this country and they are also ‘immoral’. (focusing on Christianity for the moment because I want to but if you really want me to I’ll get you the information on some of the other religions) So why is prostitution illegal? That exploitation bit doesn’t do it for me. First, anytime you work for someone else you are going to be exploited and second if someone freely wants to make that their career who the hell has the right to tell them not to? No, really. Who?
Public safety then? Not so much. If it was legal it could be regulated, licenses could be issued and tests required. Hell, it’d probably be good for the profession (and the economy).
Hmm…maybe because it would tear families apart…like alcohol? Yeah making that illegal didn’t do much good either did it? Besides if a guy/gal is going to go looking to pay someone to get off if it is legal you can bet they were paying for it or getting it elsewhere when it was illegal.
So back to my original statement about prostitution being illegal because it makes men insecure. Well…up until recently men made all the laws. Hell, even now out of the 435 members of the House 76 are women and of the 100 Senate members only 16 are women and the Supreme Court is way male heavy. So…it isn’t women who have a problem with prostitution it is men. Why? Because if women owned their sexuality then men would have one less way to make women feel inferior, dependant, threatened etc. Just as women were eventually allowed to own property, weren’t considered the property of the husband or father, were allowed to vote, were allowed into ‘male’ professions…the legalization of prostitution would be a step towards equality and would give men one less word in their arsenal to use to degrade.
Now if you want to talk to me about making the laws of this country revolve around Christian (or whatever religion) morality, I’m fine with that. I actually think quite a few of our laws don’t follow a moral line and would like to have them changed to suit my own beliefs. However, with our current form of government I can’t find a solid legal reason for prostitution to be illegal. How about you?
I’ve been trying to figure it out too. Not because I want to go into business, but because it doesn’t make sense. If you look at states like Nevada that have legalized it, those women are safe physically and sexually. They are getting paid really well. They have control over who and what they do. They do not have to stand out in the elements for $20. From what I can tell they are not turning tricks to support their drug habit either.
Not only are hookers on a street corner endangering themselves because of the uncontrolled atmosphere, they are endangering the men because the man has not idea how clean or safe this woman is.
All around, I see no reason not to legalize it.
I know many who feel the same way. It’s the taboo, I think.

@Kelly - I think it would be safer for the women and for the clients if it was legalized and regulated.
@eclecticbird, yup, yup, that’s what I’m saying. It’s the worlds oldest profession, so you know it’s not going to stop. So why not make it legal so the women are kept safe from harm and are given as much as possible to make the sex as safe as possible for both parties.
As with many things in this country, the reasoning behind certain laws is lacking.

Oh…as was pointed out to me, I focus on women in my article and there are in fact male prostitutes. Yeah..well I don’t care about them
I care about people calling me a whore or a bitch as if it were an insult and if dude is getting called a whore or a bitch that’s his problem ():o)
However, in all fairness… I think guys should be able to sell it if chicks can.
